I've been watching INTC closely, and I'm pretty tempted to nibble at this level, but I'm still not sure that it feels "right" for some reason.

CEO Otellini is in a good position; if Intel improves, he gets the credit. If not, Craig Barrett gets the blame. For Otellini, the payoff schedule resembles a call option: limited downside risk, unlimited upside payoff. So he may decide to act boldly. At least, boldly by Intel standards.

Benchmarks are looking quite good thus far for the Conroe (desktop) chips, Woodcrest (server) chips are also looking good in terms of power consumption, though I haven't seen comprehensive benchmarks yet for them.

I'm still holding my INTC shares, with intent to hold them through the fall; my only concern is the potential announcement of a poor quarter. I'm more or less at breakeven at the current share price.

Bemused as to why this thread still has any sort of life.

INTC is a sick dog with three varieties of fleas. Doesn't matter how good you may think their processor is compared to AMD or whoever, this is not where the battle is being fought. When the PC companies catch a cold, these guys get the flu.

So may as well forget about fundamentals, take a look at the chart one last time to say "Goodbye", and then go and find a sucker that is actually doing something!

Plenty of good-lookers at the bar!

More great news on the PC front:

Dell Shares Plunge on Lowered 2Q Outlook

Dell Shares Plunge to Close to a 5-Year Low on Lowered 2nd-Quarter Outlook

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) -- Shares of Dell Inc. plummeted Friday to nearly a five-year low after the world's largest computer maker lowered its fiscal second-quarter earnings outlook below Wall Street's estimates, due mainly to aggressive price cuts in a slowing worldwide commercial market.

Dell's shares plunged $2.80, or 13 percent, to $19.30 in early trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

The company said it expects second-quarter earnings between 21 cents and 23 cents per share on sales of about $14 billion.

Analysts, on average, had been looking for earnings of 32 cents per share on sales of $14.23 billion, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.

Dell said it will post its financial results for the second quarter on Aug. 17.

  8. Anybody can read the financial news and pick a beaten up stock and then proceed to comment like they're some kind of stock guru.

And stop posting widely read business news articles... unless you want to look stupid.

You may be right......however, he is posting the right sort of news for this thread.

Many posters here are concentrating on engineering advantages/advances of INTC vs AMD as reasons for buying the stocks of these companies. Essentially these two companies manufacture components, albeit very hi tech ones, that go into other pieces of equipment ie PC's for the most part. The assumption is that better engineered and more advanced components will drive the sales of the end piece of equipment. Maybe that happened ten years ago....

Personally I can't see any real good reason for the big PC companies to perform any better over the next year or so. However if you are a long term investor, maybe its coming up to the time when these stocks offer some incredibly good buying. If over the next couple of years there is some REAL quantum leap in technology, which in turn drives a sector, then INTC will probably be in the best position to take advantage of such a shift rather than AMD, purely on size alone.
