The video was offensive. They looked into the user and also found that he was a racist troll who also targeted CNN journalists. They did the right thing. If anything, they spared him by not immediately disclosing his identity. I would not have been so accommodating.
I'm not going to sit here and judge the guy. Maybe he was being honest about his bigotry and not really trolling. But that's not really the point. CNN chose to dig up some dirt on the guy to sell some narrative about violence against reporters and the "filthy elements" that push for that violence. So what if the right decided to out some liberal host for being gay, or dressing as a woman, or having a foot fetish, things that attack the person rather than the issue?
Offensive? Please. These are the guys who say everyone involved needs to have thicker skin. If they consider this a hard punch, well then, I guess we can all figure out their agenda. Silence all critics and those who disagree with making personal info public and unleash the hit squads. No, no oppression there. None at all.
No, I'm equating the response some groups would have to either "secret" being disclosed and the reputation effects it could have on said person.
"CNN said on Tuesday that it had found and spoken to the Reddit user, who had apologized for creating the video and other posts that were racist and anti-Semitic, including one that added Jewish stars to photos of CNN personalities..."
Either expose his identity or do not expose his identity. Saying they will expose his identity or not based on his future on-line behavior violates all sorts of journalism standards -- and can only be defined as blackmail. What if FOX News did the same think to you on ET. They hunted down your real identity, called you up, made you apologize for your many previous offensive posts (in their eyes), and then said that they would release your name publicly if your future behavior on ET did not meet their undefined standards for being non-offensive. What would you call that? The correct term is blackmail.
I'm not even remotely embarrassed by anything I ever posted. CNN gave him an out. You're holding it against CNN. He's probably thankful.
