Since we know innocents have gone to death row and evidence points against it working as a deterrent overall, I would answer no.
ok, I agree mistakes have been made, we should be sure, etc. But, do you believe deterrence works at all? like say--- seeing a cop alongside the road and slowing below the limit? Or not speeding at all to avoid the fine, etc? Or trading within the rules to avoid SEC violations? Deterrence works in some situations then right? I will grant you that it may not deter an animal like Tookie, but what about the 'crimes of passion'. or a bar fight, etc. People get killed under those circumstances. Not killed by a sociopath like Tookie, but by regular folks that don't have a prior record. Do you see the difference I'm making here?????
Deterrence works on crimes of passion? Deterrence only works when people are reasonable, not passionate. When they can think before hey act. Crimes of passion are about having emotions overcome reason.
no - sorry for the misunderstanding. the criminal has the mental health issue, not you (that im aware of ) i dont think that someone who rapes and kills children is a sane member of society. did i say he can change? no. life inside is the solution. murder is murder.
That may be the case but when a nutcase breaks into my house they are likely to find the business end of a 12 ga as the method of deterence. That solves your delimmea on capital punishment.
Given you rarely display reason, I would expect a gun in your hands would always give rise to acts of passion....
Actually, I'm okay with this. But (and that's a big but), the problem is the weakness of our prison systems in the U.S. Listen to me; they are a joke! Everyone wants to claim that the death penalty is not a deterrent. And I fully understand where that line of thinking comes from. The way the death penalty is imposed in this country renders it ineffective to many (not all). See my earlier solution for this. The problem is that prison in the U.S. is not a detergent to crime. Many of the folks who wind up in our prisons are quite content/happy to be there. There are many factors involved. Some want to go in for the healthcare. Many go in to be "rescued" from the streets. Some are old and can't afford a nursing home, etc. However, if our prison administrators were allowed to operate these facilities in the manner that they should be conducted, you would see a huge decline in the numbers of our local thugs who are unafraid and so willing to return to the life of incarceration. As I stated many times before; our thugs in the USA wouldn't dare go to country X (pick one) and commit their crimes of choice, because incarceration in other countries is not a pleasant thing. Every thing the liberal beaurecrats can think of are available to these sick and perverted individuals we call "inmates" here in the good ol' USA. It's really pathetic.
Good, I got somebody to agree that deterrence CAN work. As a thinking man, you also say that life is not just black or white, correct? And that shades of grey exist also. Therefore, there must be shades of grey regarding the 'passion' in crimes of passion. So there will be varying levels of reasonableness, varying levels of thinking before and during the act. So if the death penalty threat enters the mind of just one person, and prevents the death of an innocent, isn't it woth it now?
Well I'd definitely be against pay per view. As many as possible would need to see the results. Earlier someone mentioned sponsorship. That'd be a great idea. Think of the money that would bring in. That would make "The Apprentice" look like a drop in the bucket. Much of that money could be given to the families of the victims. Hmmm.....Too bad congressmen don't read ET chit chat!!
Muslim countries are well known for their harsh laws and sentences, their sense of justice is swift and merciless....yet they are also producing Islamic fascism which promotes "rationalized" violence. Communist countries also had/have harsh laws and swift merciless justice....
