That is coming from the tabloid press. Governments had to shut down states because that is what you are supposed to do in a pandemic. Covid is airborne and lethal. The only way to protect people is by isolating them from the virus, as masks didn't do anything. The virus would have become way nastier if they didn't shut down states. In Burundi in Africa no one, or under 1% got vacinated. Around 30 dead in 4 years, if the number is true. There was a lot of open advents/ elections party/ Miss Burundi 2020/2024 etc. indoor advent without masks. Alot of Amish people are also not vacinated, witout alot of dead. I know the way the US handled COVID has become a political topic. But it isn't. The reason why different countries handled the issue differently is because of many factors. And one is population numbers. In the case of Sweden, they don't have the same exposure to external people coming into the country like the US. So they can afford to keep everything open as it was before the outbreak. The same happens with African countries. Not many people migrate there. They have the luxury of handling things the way they want, simply because they don't have the problem. If you have a strong stream of people crossing the border. Either in or out, I am not saying this is an issue about immigration, you have to stop it. In a pandemic you have to stop the flow of people and keep them in a place under quarantine. Because you can't control the ones that are infected. So countries like the US and China must block every flow of people. Simply because they are too many to control. I am from Spain and the government didn't shut down anything initially and probably didn't have to, but for good measure they followed what bigger countries did, just to stop that flow of people. We blocked any immigration coming from the US and China first. People started screaming that is racist and poorly handled and we didn't have to do that. Families got stuck in airports, holidays got canceled, busineses stopped relation with those two countries and everything fell part. You have to do it, you have to block everyone coming from the US to the country, because the US is the biggest hub of flow. It is the most dangerous country in a pandemic. And in China, they only had 60,000 deaths from COVID, less than flu, just like in Burundi, those were official Government statistics. However, China did have complete locked down so both methods worked well, you just have to pick either or, no in-between.
As for Burundi, it is one of the poorest country on earth (87% of population living on less than $2/day) as subsistence farmers - meaning they are outdoors a lot and not near others not from their immediate area. Or IOW not in an office, movie theatre, airliner, restaurant. All the places the modern world advises, correctly, to avoid during the spread.
