World leaders meet to put more pressure on Gadhafi --------------------------------- http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/03/29/libya.war/index.html More than 40 foreign ministers and representatives from regional groups will attend the conference, including U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Chairman of the African Union Jean Ping and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. "The purpose of this conference is to broaden and deepen the coalition effort," said British Foreign Secretary William Hague. "We all want to see that cease-fire. We all want to see Gadhafi go. Those things are clear. But once we have that cease-fire, we have something to work with." Organizers of the conference say the influential group will look for ways to strengthen the U.N. Security Council resolution approved on March 17 that created a no-fly zone above Libya and mandated the protection of civilians. They will also search for urgent ways to get humanitarian aid to war-torn cities like Misrata. --- http://blogs.aljazeera.net/live/africa/libya-live-blog-march-29 1:55pm The Libyan opposition's Transitional National Council has released a two-page political platform, called "A Vision of a Democratic Libya." http://english.aljazeera.net/mritem...m Transitional National Council Statement.pdf Among other principles, the document calls for a national constitution that separates government into executive, legislative and judicial branches, a guarantee of the freedom of expression, and "a state that draws strength from our strong religious beliefs in peace, truth, justice and equality." 11:08am The US State Department will soon send diplomat Chris Stevens to Benghazi "to establish better ties" with the opposition Transitional National Council, the AP reports. Stevens' mission does not constitute formal recognition of the opposition as representatives of the Libyan people, and it's unclear exactly when he will go.
