CL Redux

  1. Be very, VERY careful with TOS. When you use /CL without a contract specifier they give you a continuous that is just the prices run together without any adjustments at all. Which is fine and one valid way of doing it, as long as you know it.

If you use their Prophet Charts you can get either unadjusted or adjusted continuous contracts. CL1600 is unadjusted, and CL1700 is adjusted.

And lastly, the TOS charts daily /CL is so terrible it's not even funny. Just about everything is wrong with them. Intra-day charts are fine though.

  2. You brought up a good point that has baffled me ever since I made the switch over to CL. The main problem with CL, unlike ES, is that it expires every month rather than on a quarterly basis. That's too damn short. So when you roll over into the next expiry, the front month does not adequately show the back months, which forces you to look up the historical chart (/CL for TOS). However, I noticed there's a discrepancy between the front month and the historical charts. When I draw a trendline, the two often don't line up. This is especially annoying when you drill down to the 5 minute chart.

As far as the continuous chart via Prophet is concerned, the perplexing question is to adjust or not to adjust...that is the question. I tend to stick with the unadjusted chart, which works like a charm for ES. But I haven't seen much success when applied to CL. Some days it simply doesn't work, period.

  3. thanks for the heads up I did notice the QM has fewer screwed up candles but i didn't even know the prophet charts offered CL, did they finally add it? For my trading methods in futures precision isn't paramount like it is in equities.

  6. Okay, had enough with this nonsense. Out at 74.60.

I don't understand how these traders can engage in a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" charade, especially on a Sunday night. Crazy MOFOs!
