The legal background seems a bit sketchy but here's the run down:

Canadian hedge fund buys gold mine in Venezuela
Venezuela seizes/nationalizes gold mine because "mah socialism"
Canadian hedge fund sues CITGO somehow pulling the hat trick that CITGO=Venezuelan government because they own PDVSA which franchises CITGO.
Canadian hedge fund about to go bust
NY hedge fund picks up the tab and effectively buys lawsuit
CITGO either to be auctioned off or rebranded by hedge fund suing

    My beef:
How does a Canadian hedge fund have standing to sue over an international affair on another country's company holdings in the 1st place?

How is what a government does somehow translate into punishing/seizing a company....I suppose nationalizing companies opens you to this liability, but seems like a long shot that may have paid off only due to politics.

  2. Screw Citgo and PDVSA....unreal how the U.S. complains about all the human rights abuses and government control over freedoms in Venezuela but supports CITGO so the same govt can bring in millions of US dollars...

Wouldn't that extend to all Saudi assets and a bunch of Chinese assets?

  4. This is more direct. The Venezuelan government has gas stations all over earning direct dollars while 75% of Venezuela is poor and waiting on line to buy toilet paper.

  5. Just as planned... should be a "socialist lesson" for all... that is, "everything inures to the benefit of the government/elites while everybody else waits in line for toilet paper."

  6. I hope you limit this analysis to the particular case in point. It's tiring of hearing all those, who oppose universal healthcare, or for that matter any government regulation and control, point out Venezuela when that country is the possibly dumbest comparison to the US. How come those same pundits never mention Germany, Scandinavia, Japan and many other countries, all of which are incredibly prosperous, wealthy countries with a perfectly functioning universal health care system and very pervasive government regulations and controls.

So, I recommend sticking to this particular issue at hand when mentioning Venezuela, but generalizing and suggesting that every country that controls markets regulates markets suffers from the same ills than Venezuela is pretty shortsighted. Average Germans, Japanese , Swiss, and Scandinavians live longer, have a higher average income, higher average savings, higher average education (as measured in standardized test scores), and way better health. Yet the same haters of anything that relates to government control and intervention can always only come up with Venezuela. America is not great anymore. And in many areas and across many social levels the US is on the exact same level than average Venezuelans. Time to learn from others who do certain things better, perhaps?

  7. Lonnnng history of Socialist failures. Sounds like you favor Socialism for America. Suggest you move to Venezuala, Cuba or other where you can be happy.

  8. I suggest you await the outcome of the next election as that most likely reveals what the majority of Americans want. Then you can decide whether YOU wanna stay or move (well, move where exactly, got a visa to any other nation?)

  9. Socialism is anti-American.

All notions of "Socialism for America" are driven solely by GREED and supported by naivete.

You obviously endorse it, so UP YOURS, LETY COMMIE! ON IGNORE!

  10. ha, as if I cared whether an anonymous individual reads or ignores my posts...

And what a twisted way of thinking. If anything, then greed is fully embraced and worshipped in a purely capitalistic society, on a broad basis, throughout all social levels and layers. Those times in America never existed for a single day. America was from the get-go designed to allow the rich and powerful to write the laws. Elected officials never understood their roles as "civil servants" but instead pocket gratuities to guide their decision making to favor those who lube the engine. The only difference recently is that the masses are bleeding and hurting and slowly wake up to reality that America was never designed to emphasize the well-being of the masses but the well-being of the top 1%. Universal healthcare is self understood in most advanced societies and so also most Americans favor universal healthcare. Fact of any advanced society is that there are a some who lack the same opportunities than the rest and hence should be supported by the broad majority. Comparing what is normal in most every advanced society with Venezuela is outright absurd. But you would of course not know that because you ignore everyone as soon as you realize your extremist views differ from others.
