  2. I see no problem with Baron creating more forums, beyond the lack of people who are willing to moderate them.

However, this doesn't address the real problem.

The real problem is people like the thread starter who feels compelled to visit threads which are clearly about God/Religion and/or politics.

He has no self control to be able to just ignore those threads.

For some strange reason, he has a compulsion to read them, get upset by them, complain about them, etc.

Sort of like those people who complain about what is on TV, say those people who are afraid that if porn is on TV they will watch it, that they will have to watch it....so since they lack self control, they want to be free of any temptation, and look to the government control what they can are free to view.

That is not unreasonable explanation, but let me give you an alternative view.

What I find most exasperating about CC is that it quickly burries other threads from the few that are displayed on the front of it's given category. In this sense, it infriges in that it directs attention away from what I consider to be of interest. Further, if I were offended by the titles that I have to see in order to get to the threads that I am interested in [burried beneath other chit chat threads], to use your TV analogy, it is as if I have to see porn in order to get to my sports.

In your TV example, say take the oxygen channel for women, I don't have to turn into that channel in order to watch ESPN. The point is that even though it seems like all these religous threads and political threads don't infringe on others preferences, in fact they do because it [religion/politics] is not it's own "channel" [forum.]

  4. I see.

So if someone creates a new thread on, say cars, a member might have to go to page 2 or 3 to see it, simply because there wasn't sufficient interest in it?

I see spytrader's Nascar thread visited frequently, and appearing on the first page all the time.

Doesn't supply demand ultimately determine which threads show up at the top of the list?

I still don't understand what the real problem is.

I think it is more than a person who just wants to read the funny papers and ignore the headline news....

No you do understand what the real problem is. Some people don't get the newspaper or watch tv to get their news in that form, and get it to do sodoku puzzles or read the bridge column or look at the classifieds.

I will give you an example as it regards to me. I don't watch the local news anymore because it is mostly about death, rape and someone abandoning their baby. While I want to see the sports news, or world affairs or weather predictions, I don't want to sit through the rest to get what I am interested in. So I go to other sources like websites or radio station that allow me to put that information together without being "awed and shocked" by what others may be interested in. I am still "well informed," just not necessarily by using a given medium or a given channel.

Sperating Politics and Religion from CC would have a similar effect for me.

  6. Again, I beg to differ.

If someone has an interest in cars, movies, etc., they can simply search for threads with cars and movies.

If it is that painful to view titles of threads that are of no interest, then just use the search engine Baron has provided.

p.s. When someone buys a paper for the sports page, do they close their eyes so they don't see the front page headlines?

Hey, like I said, if Baron wants to start new forums because the demand is really there for them, and if there are moderators who want to moderate them, I would support that.

Then why have any categories on ET at all? Why not make it one big website with no forums and allow people to search the site?

Categories like forums are a form of search, it is just one that has been done already for you as a convenience. Even in websites for movies, they categorize by family movies, drama, action, rating etc.

No they do get to see the headlines. But that is like saying that all mediums must have each others limitations. For example, newspapers don't allow you to search. Does that mean that websites should also not allow a search function because newspapers have that limitation?

  9. The general category of "Community Lounge" explains that nicely, along with the "warning" given for contents...

Yes, there is more to life than trading! Drop in here to discuss things like politics, religion, current events, etc. Not for the faint of heart. If you are easily offended, stay away from this forum! These threads will not appear on the homepage.

Sounds to me like you want a "G" rated community lounge...or a lounge tailored to your interests.

  10. When I want to see an alternative to ESPN, I click on CNN then the sports tab.

I have to see CNN's non sports headlines in the process...the horror!

Say I am not into baseball during baseball season, I have to then click on ESPN or go to CNN sports, then click to the sport of my interest...the horror, I have to see their baseball headlines during baseball season in this process!
