I feel it's both a geopolitical and economic move. US needs China for something else. Mexico and Canada are patsies that US knows have no choice but to rely on US for livelihoods. And neither of the countries have nuclear weapons and very little influence on the world scene. Canada is just a nice guy and Mexico is just another trivial South American country. So USA can stick it to them for as much as it wants and both countries will have no choice but to take it. You watch, we are not going to hear a peep from Mexico or Canada. China is different; China has nukes and has influence on many Asian countries as well as Russia that US can possibly tap into to end this costly Ukrainian war and also on many middle-eastern countries as China is a big petroleum buyer and other historical ties. So US wants to be a little careful with China. Economically, China's already received a round of tariffs from Trump's first administration so this second time around, Trump wants to go a little easy on them especially when Biden's already hit them hard with the supply chain diversification. You don't want to hit China too hard. After all, China is the third largest export market for USA and it's no good to USA that China becomes piss poor and has no purchasing power. That I think is the reason why it's only 10% tariff on China and besides this is only the beginning, the first round. Trump is not even inaugurated yet. There will be more to come I am sure once he's formally in the office.
