Tomorrow in New York: Magnus vs the World http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=6663 This will be an interesting event. Is three top level grandmasters plus the rest of the world, coached by perhaps the strongest player in history, better than one player, albeit the strongest player in the world right now? Tune in. Don't miss it! <embed src="http://pauwenwitteman.vara.nl/typo3conf/ext/vara_flashplayer/player/player.swf" AllowScriptAccess="always" width="480" height="320" bgcolor="262626" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="config=http://pauwenwitteman.vara.nl/index.php%3Fid%3D1548%26type%3D9010%26tx_varaflashplayer_xmlgenerator%5Bconfig%5D%3D6601%26tx_varaflashplayer_xmlgenerator%5Bembed%5D%3D1%26cHash%3De769388881e67cfb76645794e4e2564b" ></embed>
The world got pulverized. We never had a chance. Everyone was disappointed, but maybe the biggest fighter of them all, Kasparov, couldn't take how bad we did. We were poorly prepared for the fight. We had no theory of how we should proceed. It is really annoying and I demand a rematch.

Chess at the highest levels is a complete and utter disaster. Now the most exciting chess player in modern times is dropping off the world championship cycle: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=6789 No wonder the game can't get out of it's own way as a sport.
Chess becoming part of the curriculum in many countries. In the US, there is a push for it, e.g, http://www.af4c.org/ Does chess enhance general academic performance? I would have to say unequivocally, YES. But indirectly. It simply exercises the brain muscle, which will result, in general and other things being equal, on better grades.
I have read this book I really enjoyed it and recommend it highly. I coach kids to play chess (very part time for fun although I am well payed), and I always ask the parents to read this book. Chess seems like this innocent thing, but it is a microcosm of life...
