A developer built a 'propaganda machine' using OpenAI tech to highlight the dangers of mass-produced AI disinformation

    • A developer built an AI-powered propaganda machine in less than two months.
    • Using OpenAI tools like ChatGPT, the model cost less than $400 a month to operate.
    • The project was designed to show people how easy it is to create mass propaganda.
A developer has built an AI "disinformation machine" using OpenAI-powered technology like ChatGPT.

The project, named CounterCloud, took its creator two months to complete and cost less than $400 a month to operate, highlighting how cheap and simple it can be to create mass propaganda.

The creator, who chose to remain anonymous, used the name Nea Paw and claimed to be a cybersecurity professional, Wired reported.

In a video posted on YouTube, Paw described how the project was carried out and why they were doing it.

They said they wanted to see AI disinformation "work in the real world," adding that "strong language competencies of large language models are perfectly suited to reading and writing fake news articles."

Paw said they started by inputting "opposing" articles into ChatGPT and writing prompts instructing it to write a counter article.

The AI bot would then offer different examples of the same article, written in different styles and with different viewpoints.

They said it would do this by "creating fake stories, fake historical events, and creating doubt in the accuracy of the original article."

A gatekeeper module was then added so that the AI would only respond to the most relevant content, while audio clips of newsreaders reading the fake AI-generated articles and photos were added to create authenticity.

They also created fake journalist profiles and fake comments below some articles.

The system was then told to like and repost messages that aligned with its narrative or write "counter" tweets to those that didn't.

In two months they had a fully autonomous AI-powered system that generated "convincing content 90% of the time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

The creators haven't yet set the model live on the internet, as "it would mean actively pushing out disinformation and propaganda. Once the genie is out on the internet, there is no knowing where it would end up," Paw said.

But they added that they thought more good would come from publishing CounterCloud and educating the public about how these systems work from the inside.

The threat AI poses to democracy through its ability to accelerate the creation and spread of online disinformation has been one of the biggest concerns in the AI debate.

The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, recently voiced his concern about the issue, saying that "personalized 1:1 persuasion, combined with high-quality generated media, is going to be a powerful force."

Now AI entities are directly negotiating contracts, no humans needed.

An AI just negotiated a contract for the first time ever — and no human was involved
    https://www.cnbc.com/2023/11/07/ai-...t-without-humans-involved-for-first-time.html
    • In a world first, artificial intelligence demonstrated the ability to negotiate a contract autonomously with another artificial intelligence without any human involvement.
    • At Luminance’s London headquarters, the company demonstrated its AI, called Autopilot, negotiating a non-disclosure agreement in a matter of minutes.
    • It marks the first time an AI has ever negotiated a contract with another AI, with no human involved.
    • The only layer that still requires a human is the signing of the agreement.

It looks like the firing of Sam Altman in a boardroom coup surprising Open AI investors and Microsoft has turned into a fiasco. Many other executives resigned, many Open AI employees are not likely to show up to work on Monday, and the future of the company is in immediate jeopardy due to one of the stupidest decisions in tech history.

Now it appears that the board will need to bring back Sam Altman as soon as possible. The first step should be to force the resignation of all the board members who voted to fire Sam and fire the executive who planned & executed the coup for his own personal agenda.

Silicon Valley leaders are calling Sam Altman’s firing the biggest tech scandal since Apple fired Steve Jobs

There is no question that Open AI royally screwed up in firing CEO Sam Altman. For a while over the weekend it looked like he would be reinstated. The board was first given a 5pm deadline on Saturday to resign and hired Sam back then the deadline was 5pm on Sunday. The board instead hiring a different CEO (the third in three days) who vowed to "investigate Sam's firing".

At one point Sam posted a picture of him back in the headquarters over the weekend with a guest badge. Despite optimism at one point that Open AI would hire Sam back this hope did not come to fruition.

As of Monday morning Microsoft hired Sam and other executives who left Open AI as the company is bleeding talent. Many employees stated they would not show up on Monday unless Sam was rehired this weekend after this coup by the board.

The significance of Sam Altman joining Microsoft should not be understated. First, it should be understood that Microsoft hots ChatGPT in their cloud and have rights to inspect all the code. Microsoft is the largest investor in Open AI and provided their investment on the agreement that ChatGPT would be integrate with Bing and other Microsoft applications -- the focus is entirely commercial (a lesson to the existing board who wanted to not make commercial deployments).

The second thing to note is that Microsoft will immediately provide a home to employees leaving open AI. These employees will bring their knowledge and allow Microsoft to simply build their own AI and leave ChatGPT (and Open AI) in the dustbin of tech history. The other thing to note is that Microsoft will hire all these open AI people so they don't flee to other AI competitors.

All in all, the firing is Sam Altman is one of the most screwed up episodes in tech industry history rivaling the firing of Steve Jobs from Apple. The entire situation left many leading tech investors sick to their stomachs.
