As of 8:05 EST I can't get any chart to show.
Any instrument or any time frame say
"Attempting to retrieve data" but never
succeeds. Same thing happened for a while
this afternoon, but than charts worked again
    into the close.

As a workaround you can enter the stock as (Directed) instead of as (Smart)

Without more details such as pc specs/type of connection/approx download/upload speed/virus software (or hate to say it something that got past your AV software) etc etc it is pure speculation to say what is the actual cause.

My shot in the dark guess it is not IB, but who knows really.

I thought that too until other people here experience the same thing.

I don't have my PC tuned on now, but if I am using four 24inch screens with 14 charts loaded... what do you think would be optimal specs of those things you mentioned

Good grief do you have eyesight problems or just trying to keep things simple LOL. I intraday trade a single laptop computer. Or my IPad.

I am running four 24 inch screens with 14 charts.

    I have Windows 10, Intel i7-4820K @ 3.7GHz, 24GB RAM , Integrated GeForce GTX 760 (for 2 screens) , Dedicated AMD Radeon HD 7400 (for 2 screens)

Download speed is around 8.5MB/sec when I am downloading a game. Upload I am not sure but my internet subscription is Fiber Hybrid 60Mbs

That should be sufficient. Another factor is how much data are those 14 charts holding and at what level of granularity. Meaning are they of the extremely short term variety i.e. 3 or 5 tick bar charts?

If not other than say one or two short ones and only a couple of days/week or two of data then it is likely from IB's side.
