oops....I looked again and they are equivalent as I should have figured out from the math. Sorry about that.

    Ok,
In the interest of keeping it simple...I just put in the pivot points on the 13 min chart. It is in the Show Me on TS.
This worked fine without them truthfully. See if it helps?

    bobcathy,

Just wondering how long a history you have with this and how it has performed for you?

  4. Earlier I asked Cathy about the first trade today, and that I didn't see the Chimp rule covering that short when she did.

Cathy replied that it was there when the trade was made, but the rising market moved the EMA.

This has bothered me all day for some reason, and I just figured out what it is. If I understand Cathy correctly then, the value of an EMA at the 10:30 bar for example, can and does change as the market moves higher from 10:31 to 10:35.

The value of a simple moving average at yesterday's close is not affected by the additon of new closes and the removal of previous closes as the length of the ma would warrant. But I understand Cathy as saying the opposite is true with the EMA.

If I understand Cathy correctly, then using her chart of this morning as evidence, it is impossible to accurately backtest an EMA crossover strategy by visually checking charts.

Where am I wrong, what am I missing?

    :)

  5. INANDLONG..... not just the EMA but all indicators change while the chart is "live" but when you study the chart at the end of the day it shows the indicators worked perfectly. this can be proven with screen capture software like SNAGIT. BOYdo i wish using indicators was not so tricky!!!!

Don't make trades until the bar of the timeframe you are trading on completes, unless you are using a breakout method where you are entering on a stop that was defined the pervious bar.

Otherwise you can never validate your methods via backtesting.

  7. Well, 172 or so traders have taken a look at Cathy's Chimp Chart.
It will be interesting to see if everyone tries this chimpanzee style
out. If so, will it just add more liquidity to the set ups? Or will it
make it 10 times as hard to get in at a good price because
everyone will be trying to get a fill at the same spot on the chart?
Maybe Cathy will change her settings so she can front run this
setup and score big. Lets's just wait and see...

Also, it is amazing how close this setup is to Don Millers style.
Or better yet, Jay Yu of The Undergroundtrader fame.

Lets just see what happens tommorow.... May the best trader win... :D

I have been fiddling around with moving averages for about 9 months. I started with Elder's method, moved to Don Miller's, then Jea Yu and now the Chimp. I have been trading for 2 1/2 years. Day trading for a year.
This journal is for me to learn as much as you.
It works in backtesting as they all do with a little human tweaking.
I am trying to work out a program for it on TS so it takes the human element of hesitation out.

  9. Of course since the idea for the Chimp is published on a website, and looks like it has been there awhile given the prices, I guess that several more traders from ET probably won't bring the whole idea grinding to a screeching halt.

Same goes with the 30 minute breakout trade recently 'revealed'.

As hard as it is to believe, market dynamics are more powerful than even the big money that populates this board.

    so far this morning

I made 1/2pt. on a gap fade with the chimp cross.
I did not take the second cross down with the trend
because of the news due at 10:00....
now I am waiting until it settles down to make my next move.
