US has AAAA bond credit rating. meaning the debt has ZERO chance of default. The debt is gauranteed by the gov't. The debt is foreign currency reserves that is used for future purchase of US imports. That is why they hold USD dollars. Ie if you an importer of a foreign product , you buy or own their currency. or currency hedge. it's only a few triliong that China owns. considering the size of the American economy the debt owed is small and manageable.
