  4. Ya know. That is up for debate.

Your leader sits there in power with his party having received 33% of the popular vote but he cobbles together support from other parties after much backroom dealing in Ottawa and puts together a government. So while the world and American lefties bitch about our electoral college system which occasionally allows a president to win the electoral vote and lose the popular vote, you gotta realize that the Canadian or parliamentary system in general can also look pretty frigging ugly to Americans who are used to direct voting.

Actually it is looking pretty frigging ugly to Canadians too which is why Trudeau is in trouble. He is a product of using duct tape and bondo to cobble together a coalition rather than a direct vote. Americans prefer democracy.

Also, Trudeau just prorogued/suspended parliament until the end of March. Say what? He suspended Parliament to prevent any no-confidence votes being held to end his government while the Liberals are running a campaign to find a Trudeau replacement.

Oh, and did I mention that Trudeau needed to get permission from the King's governor general to suspend or prorogue parliament? As an American, I am looking for the democracy in that but not seeing it. Our process does not require approval from King Charles III on anything. We changed that process in 1776.

Yeh, not a good week to be getting uppity with Americans about how Canada is allegedly a democracy and we are not.

  5. You're a good man, but you're making a mistake. He's Trump North. To the core. An empty suit with malignant stitching.

  6. All the coalition does is prevent an early (snap) election...which is part of our politics where we don't have to wait out the term if people don't like the direction things are going. It doesn't decide an election like the electoral college does. The NDP joined the coalition because they knew they didn't have the votes...so it was more of a power grab by them than the Liberals...a way for the NDP to push through their own policies. They will likely suffer the consequences in the next election. We also don't have term limits...if things are going well why would you want to force a party out? That's probably a moot point because usually after 8-10 years the party has worn out its welcome anyway.

The system is not perfect but at least every vote counts. Everything could be improved by using the ranking system however.

  7. No. That does not get around the point I am making. The coalition may prevent a snap election as you said but even after a regularly scheduled election you still have to cobble together a coalition to get a majority if one of the major parties does not have it.

Thus my comment that Trudeau got 33% in the last regularly scheduled election but still got to be prime minister and, as you said, was then beholden to the NDP for their support. Does not look like a democracy to Americans. Not saying its a bad process or that you are not entitled to it. Just objecting to your uppity statement that Canada is a democracy with the implication that America is not. The Parliamentary system requires so pretty ugly sausage making along the way.

  8. It's more of a democracy than winner-take-all.

  9. Unless you have ranked voting this will always be the case. When you have multiple parties rarely will one get 50% of the vote. What's important is that EVERY vote counts. If you are a conservative living in California or a democrat living in Oklahoma your vote is useless.

  10. Probably seems that way to woke Canadians who want a system where everyone gets a participation trophy.

Americans are more comfortable with competition and letting the top dog win. It is what made us great. Fortunately for you, we are now helping to make Canada great too. You are welcome.
