My first winter in Canada, just a couple of weeks after I got there, the temperature fell below -40C, and oscillated there from -48C to -40C for 21 straight days. That set a record even for Whitehorse, the most days in a row where the temperature never rose above -40C. Fortunately I had an old US Air Force extreme cold weather suit which worked great, I got to walk around, hearing distant aircraft as if they were 20 feet overhead, and testing whether spit does indeed freeze before it hits the ground. My looking around was circumscribed by my coat's tunnel hood, lol.
