Even Soros himself admits he's a net loser playing the short side.

Of course you can. I know of a great short seller, who has made double digit profits for every one of the last 11 years. 90% of his quarters are winners. And his few losing quarters are less than 1% each. He's well known in the trading world as one of the most consistently profitable short sellers on the planet.
