I like that, dude. I really like that.

I don't really get why some are grainy and some aren't when doing the tv thing, but it's nice to know that the bravias are not that way. thx for the info.

  2. Do you plan to read any text display on the monitor?

    15 feet away? Seriously?

For people with normal vision, let's say using a 22-inch monitor, using resoltion 1920 x 1080. The typical distance is about 24 inchs to 30 inchs. You can read small text display on the charts.

To maintain the same legibility, one has to maintain about the same viewing angle. For 10-15 feet away, you are scaling things up about 4-5 times. So you probably need a 80-inch to 100-inch monitor to be able to view the text.

But of course if you just look at the low-res display, or blow up the text using a size-72 font... sure.

You are right. I am not an expert on points you made but It sounds like you know your stuff.

I probably will have to keep proper distance to view text at 1920X1080.

I am so glad to see people using the TVs.

Sony Bravia is little pricy for me but may be Samsung.

Anyone else used other brands of TVs ?

By the way, do I need a TV Tuner Card in my cpu ?

    Thanks

  4. Most likely not. But it depends. Some HDTVs have SVGA input. Those are for analog signals. Specifically for computers. They look like this:

    http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&...7&q=svga&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

If so, you can use a SVGA cable to connect the PC to the HDTV.

Some HDTVs (most current models) now have HDMI input. They are for digital signals. Some video cards now are equipped with HDMI output. They look like this:

    http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&...1&q=hdmi+cable&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

They look like a little flat trapezoid. If BOTH your HDTV and video card have HDMI output/input, you can use a HDMI cable to connect the two.

The above are connecting your video card to the HDTV without any TV tuner card.

But the distance between your PC and HDTV is a consideration too. Most of these cables that come with the video card are 6-feet in length. Since you want to sit far from the HDTV, you probably need extra-long cables. 12-feet one, or more likely the 25-feet one. The long cables are expensive. e.g. over UDS $30 for the cable alone.

Just in case you think Sony's are to expensive, you generally get what you pay for. I took this pic less than an inch from my older Sony Bravia. Even with the JPEG compression you can see how clear the text is. In real life the text looks glossy like each webpage is a magazine (eg, think: Forbes, Marie Claire, etc)

My NX800 Sony Bravia is even clearer at 1 inch away and looks flawless at just 1 ft away. You can get 6ft DVI to HDMI cables on Amazon.com for like $8 too.

I would test your laptop with any other tv before purchasing it if I were you. Trust me, I tried this with over 6 other LCDs and plasma TVs I have in my home, and they all looked like crap. I never was into Sony's until I hooked my laptops up to them. Oh yea, the new NX800 has wifi built into it. I can stream photos from Flickr, music, video from the internets to with no computer attached to it. Totally worth the price

(Update) Below is a pic of the Sony Bravia NX800 less than 1 inch away. Look how effing clear that is (even with the image compression). Its super clear in real life with your eyes:

  6. zanek:

You mentioned "1 inch away" several times. 1 inch is between what and what?

    The display is quite niice!

  7. zanek's note reminded me...

If your HDTV has only HDMI input, and your video card has only DVI output, you can get a conversion cable to connect the two. DVI on one end and HDMI on the other end.

    Bolimomo,

I meant that the camera lens was 1 inch away from the screen.

    Hi zanek

Thank you so much for putting in all the effort. Really appreciate it.

I am sold on Sony but they don't have NX800 series but have NX710 where I live. But 46 inch NX710 is over $5000.00 so that is out of my range. It has 3D feature but is that a requirement ?

They do have HX800, EX710. Both are a max of 55 inch size & reasonably priced around $2500.00

Do you have any experience with either of them ?

    Thank you again.
