Fuel has nothing to do with profits actually, shippers pay surcharges, which right now is $2.50.
    http://www.ooida.com/EducationTools/Tools/fuelsurcharge.asp
Anything over that amount is charged to shipper who in turn charges the receiver. Most trucking companies have fuel down to a science and good owner operators will do the Math or end up cheating themselves which many do and end up bankrupt. All trucking companies HAVE to buy enough fuel in each state or that state will charge the company so much road usage taxes, when I first started I had to keep an eye on miles driven in each state and turn into the state, now GPS keeps track, most states rebate some when trucks use toll roads, there are exceptions like Texas I believe. Most trucking companies will tell you where you have to fuel and how many gallons allowed based on state taxes and cost of fuel being too high, it is very similar of being Delta Neutral in options, others states like Texas they allow fuel fills as fuel itself much cheaper in certain parts and taxes lower.

Freight is based on a concept most people unaware, freight charges are not evenly across the country, it is based on where you picking up and where you delivering, if one or both are remote areas, freight can cost much much more, you have to remember the miles/gallons of going where you are now to where you have to pick up might be 1-800 miles away, as an owner operator you will lose money just going to go pick up and if you deliver in area where it has no freight coming out, you be "deadhead"-no freight for how many miles to next assignment-load, as company driver most pay you whether you have freight or not, but the company loses money for many areas of driver not hauling freight. Companies do get breaks on freight by being good customers of trucking company and that is dedicated freight, but it is pennies a mile. Trucking companies that have been in business long time operate on same "style" of management of the company and pennies matter.

Where fuel hurts are two ways, the companies that have to paid shipping as they will experience lower profits and DUMB owner operators, no different than young traders. O/O will not be well educated before going into being a business owner, they totally lack math abilities and often buy trucks as a toy instead of a machine to make money, chromed out to the max egos, like here. LOL But you have knowledge being an owner and you take loads no one have skills to do, like trading, you get paid so much more. Like underground in mining, salt, soap in Wyoming, many underground man-made caverns in Kansas City for limestone. http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-ap-news-guide-kansas-citys-network-of-underground-caves-2015-9 Lamar Hunt bought out all those caves and made storage to rent out, now that is novel way to make money.
OMG, I got lost once picking up frozen food in one of the caves, took my four hours to find the exit, I kept passing some guys working at some docks laughing their asses off as I kept trying to find exit, got out to ask and one guy said they had new exit and followed him, I'd still be their if he didn't assist. LOL

Some trucking companies never do well as they are student companies and have 500% turnover, they get the worst of drivers just graduating from schools and pay them as low as they can as they inexperienced and drivers can't make ends meet and quit. They often have several lawsuits going for accidents involving deaths. What truck schools don't tell you that over 90% of the students won't be driving 6 months from now, takes certain kind of person to be away from home so much for long haul, I love it as allows me to go anywhere in lower 48 states and take my time off anywhere. Girlfriend going with me in few months, huge tax advantages trucking as well, each day $70 tax write off for food, most are away from home 325 days a year. So you can see why shortage of drivers always.

Am long energies in commodities and some stocks, but has nothing to do with usages, it was just time to buy as system gives signals and buying stocks based on percentages of dividends and hedged.
