My metric would be to look for a guy that looks comfortable and non-assuming no matter what he's wearing. It could be a suit and tie, or it could be jeans. BTW, I don't get the whole cult of watches - these things tell time worse then a cheap quartz Timex, what's the point? If you are thinking of the HIV comment, it was not him, it was @recession2016. Very poor taste if you ask me
Watches have jumped the shark. Well & truly. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_shark Slick advertising in glossy magazines is the attempt to keep the watch industry alive. (Reminds me of Coca Cola advertising) I haven't worn a watch for several years. Mobile phones which everyone these days carry tell; Time, Date, Calculator, Maps, Compass, Internet, Emails, SMS, Camera, Photos, Contacts, Notes, Alarms, Alerts etc.... Why would someone be so daft as pay more for a watch than a good mobile? It is a stupid fashion relic from a bygone era which is now on life support. My immediate impression when I see someone wearing a fancy watch is thinking to myself "trying to impress but you've missed the bus" (Usually bosses at work - those who still can't operate a computer)
And here I sit with my ancient Timex Ironman -- my second, after the first one went 20 years or so.... (a bunch of batteries, 3 "sport-duty" wristbands, and the casing worn so much that you had to have *memorized* the buttons, as there were no identifiers left)..... The first one, I paid ~$50.... the second one, I paid maybe $15, and I don't think it was on sale. I just bought my third strap for it. Such a cheapass. In the safe sits an ancient Bulova with 24-hour movement and face. Cool shit. But I'm not kind to watches (I mean, who grinds the paint off of an Ironman???), so maybe once a year I take it out. {Thanks, Dad.}
As a long time runner, I've been through a succession of Ironman watches, even during my Swiss watch period (well over now). The straps end up splitting through much usage and the cost of replacing and one assumes the battery will be next, it makes sense to just get on eBay and get a new one at a good discount.
I'm with ya ("Yer gonna run *how*far*?? I don't like to *drive* that farrrrrr!"), except that I discovered the *wonder* of the velcro sport band. WOW. Lighter-than-snot, and lasts and lasts. Couldn't find one this last time 'round, and the replacement looks more like 'original equipment' -- I'm expecting it to snap at any moment.....
I haven't worn a watch in 10 years. The battery went out on my SEIKO, I procrastinated replacing it and then I realized I was more comfortable without it. I have a clock in the car, clocks on my Iphone, clocks on my laptop, TV and on the wall. I don't need a watch. I don't think most people need them either. It's just that we get used to them and we think we have to wear one. Watches are jewelry for men. If I was going to wear one again, I 'd probably buy a Movado. Very simple and attractive.
