This kind of thing makes me so angry! As a substitute teacher, I regularly encountered students who couldn’t read, or didn’t know their multiplication tables (or how to use rulers). There’s no excuse for it! When I tutored such students, I immediately began to catch them up—from day one! Yet, if you call out anyone in the education establishment for such failings, they get absolutely irate and go ballistic on you, attacking you vehemently for daring to question their competence and all their “hard work.”
