Bryan Johnson, Mel Gibson—and possibly RFK Jr.—swear by methylene blue for wellness. Science says...

Kinda off topic so just quickly. The problem with Bryan Johnson is that he is n=1. (aka anecdote) He is taking about 30 different pills, pretty much impossible to know, which one is working, neutral or outright harmful for longevity. And he keeps adding and stopping them.

Now he is spending around 2 million per year on himself. He could easily afford another million and make this study n=100 or n=500. So for scientific purposes, he increasing the number of participants and lowering the number of supplements for each test subject would do lots of good. Hell, people would sign up just for the free supplements.

Adding to this that he has financial interest in promoting certain supps, makes his experience very questionable.

I should quickly say that obviously being in Colombia we can do whatever we want medically...though I do sanity check with doctor friends, specialists and employ qualified nurses as needed. I'm very good at drawing blood but if ilI I can't be around my wife since she has heavy immune supression.

I preferred to go through the plasma cleaning procedures myself first too, we are pretty wealthy so just getting the equipment at home was easier and more practical. At this stage I have over a half million in kit for doing this and her other labs at home. This because speed was of the essence (max two hours to test), traffic horrible and three blood tests a day would require permanent hospitalisation anyway. It's pretty torturous, needles, needles, needles, the missus is tough mentally but... Have to make things as easy as possible long term.

On topic, I’m somewhat interested in methylene blue (MB) as a potential way to reduce oxidative stress in my own battered brain. I’ve been exposed to multiple explosive shockwaves from mines, mortars, and similar events, so I likely have damage comparable to what is observed in military veterans. Am I as good a meat computer as I can be? I don't know.

MB has been shown in animal models to reduce microglial activation and lower pro-inflammatory cytokines, which is significant for managing chronic inflammation after blast-related injuries. Although MB is naturally clear until it oxidizes (turns blue), it remains pharmacologically active in the body. It can neutralize superoxide and nitric oxide, both of which increase sharply after brain trauma. Rather than acting as a basic free radical scavenger, it modulates redox cycling at the cellular level, which is more effective in managing oxidative stress.

For those concerned about taking the oxidized (blue) form, that is the standard and it still functions as expected once absorbed is my understanding. I'd put it into a pill capsule though.

Low doses in the range of 0.5 to 1 milligram per kilogram of body weight are often used for neuroprotective effects. Higher doses can reverse its benefits and increase oxidative stress, so caution is advised.

Pairing MB with oxygen therapy, fasting, and exercise may enhance its effects, based on findings in animal studies.
