Seems like a waste for you to head off to Afghanistan given your qualifications - though you seem to be thinking that just cause you have a degree from a top 20 institution that the world owes you a living. Anyway, there a lot of jobs you could do without joining the military. This seems so extreme that as someone else said, is more like a cry for help. Just be a labourer or something. You never know what opportunities arise, and it's better to be looking for work, while employed, than looking for work whilst unemployed. Based in Asia, another option would be teaching English out here. Sure, it's a shit job with relatively low wages, but you can see a bit of the world and you can shag lots of fit birds while you're here, at least until the end of the downturn. Should you go to Afghanistan and have your legs blown off or something, things will be even harder for you.
Go special forces, navy seals, green berets, etc. Get out after you see some action and seek employment with companies the likes of one formerly known as Black Water inc. I read they pay well and with your degree in finance/economics you will be an asset above and beyond the entry level requirements. That's my advice. Never mind that it is wholly grounded in fantasy than experience, but you are young and you have a good head on your shoulders. You can do it!

You guys are clueless if you really think the military is a last resort job. I know many people here that quit various desirable careers to be medics. Life isn't all about maxing your hourly rate. Been there done that for 7 years. I'd rather have a sgt as my boss instead of a computer screen any day. But really the deciding factor for me was I didn't want to look back at my life when I'm old and see a lifetime of sitting in front of my monitors clicking buttons for a few bucks.

I remember being at MCRD SD years ago and at night when we would hit the rack recruits would just disappear. I found it hilarious that recruits would just vanish without a sound in the middle of the night. And the poor saps weren't going over the wall. It was all a snatch and grab and discharge operation. I'm laughing now thinking about it. I predict the Mr. Econ Top School Genius doesn't survive the snatch and grab op. Let alone Mt. Mutherfuxxer.
