I didn't use the correct wording, there has been some contamination but it's my understanding the fuel rods and reactor vessel are still intact. I don't pretend to be a specialist but I do try to educate myself instead of being ignorant like our panicking thread author.

They are lying the same way they lie about those full body scanners at the airport. Any machine that has the ability to scan through your body will pack a punch of radiation. It's doesn't take a scientist to figure that out. I'd be willing to bet they give off more radiation than a CT scan, which is equivalent to about 400 X-rays.

What does this mean in layman's terms? Is this news surprising?

Fuel rods damage at Fukushima's 2 reactors estimated at 70%, 33%

    TOKYO, March 16, Kyodo

An estimated 70 percent of the nuclear fuel rods have been damaged at the troubled No. 1 reactor of the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant and 33 percent at the No. 2 reactor, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Wednesday.

The reactors' cores are believed to have partially melted with their cooling functions lost after Friday's magnitude 9.0 earthquake rocked Fukushima Prefecture and other areas in northeastern and eastern Japan.

  7. No they aren't you imbecile. These guys are the men hired for pittances by the greedy fucks that profited from this technology. And they are the ones volunteering their lives to try to save their communities while the executives are planning their escape routes.

If you have nothing useful to say, the least you could do is have the respect to shut up.

  8. At the very least there is managerial incompetence and very poor communication. Add to that the cultural views of hierarchy, duty, shame, etc. that may be influencing their public communications.

Another question is WTF Obama, Sarkozy, Merkel and leaders of other countries with highly-skilled engineering resources are doing, and why haven't they interceded. The whole world has a stake in this, and if the Japanese can't handle it, others have a duty to step in.

this video gives a good explanation to the uneducated such as myself as to what is going on here:-

However, (and assuming that the chain reaction really was stopped at the time of the earthquake as we were told) I am still a little a little unclear about what a total "full scale" meltdown/breakdown of the fuel rods would entail.

If the fuel rods are further damaged (or compromised, to use industry jargon), and to quote, "uranium inside the fuel rods slumps down into the bottom of the reactor into a blob of hot radioactive lava..burning through everything into the earth"...

wtf does this mean? Is this game over for all of us, not just the Japanese? Does the lava burn a big hole into the centre of the earth and cause further earthquakes etc?

or I am getting this wrong?

  10. You have to be kidding me. Are you stupid? Those operators cooling the reactors and putting out the fires are NOT the same people who created this. The people who created this are people who don't care about the quality and safety of others and only care about making money and increasing their power status. Those are the people who should be working in the control rooms with leaky suits cleaning up their fucking mess.
