BREAKING NEW FLASH: We have a statement coming from the Federal Reserve.....Ben Bernanke says nuclear accident is contained....everyone can relax.
yep, probably a good holiday destination I think Maverick or one of the ET posters said he'd visited the plant. Maybe they should make it a tax haven, though even that would not be enough to tempt me to seek residence
"Japan: Bird's-eye view of Fukushima nuclear power plant (video)" from boingboing.net http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBXqiw6EJUk&feature=player_embedded#at=39 I don't know when this was made, but it gives an interesting visual of the plant and damages.
Have you seen this latest status report? In particular reactor 4: "renewed nuclear chain reaction feared" you know, the one with 1000s of tonnes of used fuel rods??? wtf? chain reaction? Status of quake-stricken reactors at Fukushima nuclear power plants TOKYO, March 18, Kyodo The following is the known status as of Friday evening of each of the six reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and the four reactors at the Fukushima Daini plant, both in Fukushima Prefecture, which were crippled by the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and the ensuing tsunami on March 11. Fukushima Daiichi plant -- Reactor No. 1 - Operation suspended after quake, cooling failure, partial melting of core, vapor vented, building housing reactor damaged Saturday by hydrogen explosion, roof blown off, seawater being pumped in. -- Reactor No. 2 - Operation suspended after quake, cooling failure, seawater being pumped in, fuel rods fully exposed temporarily, vapor vented, building housing reactor damaged Monday by blast at reactor No. 3, blast sound heard near suppression pool of containment vessel on Tuesday, damage to containment vessel feared. -- Reactor No. 3 - Operation suspended after quake, cooling failure, partial melting of core feared, vapor vented, seawater being pumped in, building housing reactor damaged Monday by hydrogen explosion, high-level radiation measured nearby on Tuesday, plume of smoke observed Wednesday and presumed to have come from spent-fuel storage pool, seawater dumped over pool by helicopter on Thursday, water sprayed at it from ground on Thursday and Friday. -- Reactor No. 4 - Under maintenance when quake struck, temperature in spent-fuel storage pool reaching 84 C on Monday, fire Tuesday possibly caused by hydrogen explosion at pool holding spent fuel rods, fire observed Wednesday at building housing reactor, pool water level feared receding, renewed nuclear chain reaction feared, only skeleton of building survived the fires. -- Reactors No. 5, 6 - Under maintenance when quake struck, water temperatures in spent-fuel storage pools increased to about 64 C on Thursday. -- Spent-fuel storage pools at all reactors - Cooling functions lost at all reactors, water temperatures or levels unobservable at reactors No. 1 to 4. Fukushima Daini plant -- Reactors No. 1, 2, 4 - Operation suspended after quake, cooling failure, then cold shutdown. -- Reactor No. 3 - Operation suspended after quake, cold shutdown. ==Kyodo
everyone has just accepted we're going to have another f***ing chain reaction in thousands of tonnes of used fuel rods with no containment vessel and that's all fine because Ben Bernanke can now pursue QE3?! How many people in Japan? 120 million?! This is so sad. Why are they not using EVERY possible means to cool the reactors? We have robots, we sent a man to the moon, but we can't fix this?
