IMHO, empiricism doesn't equate to a marketposition, i.e. long or short gamma, it is the way one looks at things and draws conclusions. One can be long gamma and an empiricist. Vic chose the road of short gamma for pseudo-low vol and pseudo-alpha. 90% of the crowds out there don't even know how to approach a problem, let alone solve it. Empiricism allows one to approach these problems in a way that can be measured and analyzed. From that point on each empiricist will draw his/her own conclusion, based on the logic behind the empiricism.
