i think this is somehow shifting to daily politics and its polemic. btw i am wearing the leftist cap just because people here gave me that label. i would see myself more like a widehorizonist. i can like al gore as much as ron paul. and i do not follow you in your partisan view - i critizise the military elements within a big children organisation. sure, one can argue it ain't a big deal, but as i said, that might be a question of awareness of subtleties.
just to make that clear again: there are many, many very positive thigns about the scouts. but, sorry, to a caring father there is some concern as well. i don't see why that is soo left and soo difficult to understand. and if the so often mentioned "values" include a certain degree of militarism: thnx, then these are not my values. mine work as good without uniforms, ranks and flags. maybe doublecheck yours if it is different for you.
...Wow...I can't even comment on that stupid line of thinking. That is the paranoia and conspiracy driven thinking that I was referring too.
I guess all I'm trying to add to this debate is that uniforms and badges don't make something military. Training for battles and war does. Anything can be skewed to seem militaristic using that logic. From wearing a McDonalds uniform to wearing required suits in a corporate meeting. If your argument is about having a child in things that sacrifice individuality for a more uniform team atmosphere then I can see your point. But I just don't believe that the scouts have any militaristic notions.
i can respect this point of view, though my eyes see the same facts in different light. thnx for civilised exchange of arguments.
Darn right those "homgenous" communities breed individuality. Even your liberal friends are starting to speculate it may be better to educate girls in a different room. --- Nothing like being the club champion in your favorite discipline to improve - leadership and individuality. Nothing like becoming the president of service club to learn how to lead and help the larger community. Diversity in opportunity is a laudable goal, but diversity for the sake of diversity is an unproven experiment. This is not an argument for racism. It is acknowledgment that in some situations similarity of interests and culture are a very good thing. That why we have the NAACP and its mostly black.
Hi Dad, I'd like you to meet my two friends. This is Joe and he is a boy scout. This is Bob, his Dad wouldn't let him join the boy scouts. Just wanted to see how that looks in print. I'm not quite sure what conclusions I can draw from this statement. Is Bob an individual? Joe can quit. Bob can't quit, can't join either. An opportunity for dialogue missed on developing your child.
I'm steering clear of that McDonalds and those militaristic people in those uniforms... I'm a creative guy and I don't want them infecting my thinking, I'll look like an idiot when I speak out at the next town council meeting instead of the truly creative guy I am. I know I am creative 'cause when I shut my eyes I can see these patterns moving, that's a sure sign!! I bet those Boy Scouts don't see patterns like mine........
Am I reading this correctly and has it been pointed out? You refer to your child as "her", are you stating "boyscouts ... are not for your DAUGHTER" ? Are you also inclined to ban any sons you might have from joining the GirlScouts? Next Thread... "Daughters of Confederacy ... NOT FOR MY SON!" What is that saying about Common Sense again? Oh I know, it's just common sense, in a progessive sort-of-way, to eliminate any distinctions between the sexes that is.
