Invalid analogy. Most coaches that haven't played, haven't done so because their physical shape wasn't good enough for the big leagues either due to genetics or injuries. For trading, almost anyone is fit enough to click the mouse button. Explain why a "trading coach" couldn't execute trades himself.
Ya, the pro sports = trading analogies are over played. Being 6'3", 210 and running a 4.4 forty is quite different than the ability to beat buy & hold 401k holders.
While it is presently very well controlled by a single pill a day and only very rarely rears its ugly head (and even then for only very short periods) I have suffered from a chemical disorder at times in my life that resulted in what was called manic/depression and today is called a bipolar disorder. It is a serious disease and along the lines of a genetic handicap. It would be impossible to trade during a bout of it and make money yet you would still posses all of the technical skills and knowledge acquired over the years. Under that specific set of circumstances, I would be 10 or 100 times or more accurately infinitely better at coaching than trading. That said the problem with most coaches, mentors etc. is that they have never found that elusive positive expectation. At least I can point to insanity as my excuse when things go south ... what's their excuse!
You bring up an excellent point and one that rarely gets mentioned. I'm know bi-polar disorder well as it's in my family. Jesse Livermore suffered from it as well and ultimately killed himself because of it (a common fate with those who have the disorder). Millions are inflicted with this along with many other disorders from anxiety, depression, alcohol and substance abuse to even physical ailments that could include high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, the list goes on and on. And just like sports where injuries can often take an otherwise great athlete out of the game, so can health issues for traders. I think most guys on here really underestimate how important health is to trading and I'm not talking about just mental health but even physical health. Trading is far too competitive to be able to operate at the level you need to if you have ANY impairments. Not saying it can't be done, it's just an added challenge. And for those who have them, working on "related" industries like education, consulting or even financial services can be a way around that. I can't imagine trading with bi-polar disorder. Jesse Livermore is a fascinating case study. I find it funny how "some"mock how many times he blew out without even having the slightest understanding of how challenging that disease is. In fact it's shocking how successful he was given he had that illness. Another case study on this very site I think is Rearden Metal. And I only mention it because he has detailed his struggles publicly on ET at length. I think he is a great trader with a terrible illness who would be MUCH better served "helping" others with trading then trading himself. And that is not to say he can't "push a button" like many here put it. Trading is not about pushing buttons. It's almost 100% mental. And if you have ANY kind of mental impairment, I have no idea how one can make this work consistently. And kudos to those that do because it is not easy. Swan Noir I agree with you 100%.
Itâs a one time cost. You pays yer money and you takes yer chances. I joined a few months ago. Donât care about the indicators, donât use them. Donât care about the vendors, donât pay any attention to the ads. Some garbage and some good stuff; same as ET but seems to be more civil. I figured the cost would keep the trolls at bay and so far so good.
There could be multitude of reasons eg trading coach may not have the right temperament; too timid, too aggressive etc.. just as in sports I am sure you have heard of guys who are physically gifted but never live up to their potential...
Probably he can't stand the pressure of having money on the line and doesn't have the discipline to follow his plan.
Not true. I used it to sign up for data and got a discount that matched the price of the Elite which meant it was free. I was not looking for a holy grail. -burn8
The only reason I can trade, Mav, is because the improved medications that have come on the scene in recent years can completely eliminate the symptoms in some of us that are fortunate. Since I don't have even a small fraction of Livermore's talent it would have been impossible for me to trade in that premedication era.
Yes the medications can help many. For some though the very illness can keep them from "wanting" to take them. I've had to deal with that a lot with a family member. It sounds like your case is maybe mild to moderate. For severe cases, trading is not even possible.
