I guess the intention of the block feature was meant for blocking people who persistently troll or harass you

But has turned in to a tool for blocking users who's content you just don't like. That is what the ignore feature was for.

I think there should be a limit to how many people you can block, maybe as low as 3 or 5, but definitely no more than 10. Everyone else you would have to put on ignore.

Doesn't the same problem exist with block and ignore?
Either way you don't get to see a quoted post that someone else is responding to.

There is only one type of Ignore.
But there are two types of Block, one is where you block other people and the other is where other people block you.

They are not the same thing, in that you can always take someone off your block list but you can never stop someone from blocking you.

If i put someone on Block (or Ignore), fair enough i should expect the quality of my experience in using ET to go down a bit. I made that choice.

The problem is for the person i have blocked, not their fault if I don't like their content, why do I have the power to even slightly ruin their experience of the site?

So on a matter of principle the Block feature just seems wrong. If it must stay, then it's use should be restricted, it really should only be used when someone is persistently stalking, harassing or trolling you, a last resort. For content you just don't like the Ignore feature should be used for that. The Ignore feature does not ruin or change anyone else's experience of the site, just yours.

I disagree. There are foreign trolls on ET spouting nonsense about China, Russia, Ukraine, Trump, just blatant bs where they quote from breitbart and RT and other dubious sites.

Then there are others like empty tin cans with a rock inside being shaken, posting hundreds of worthless rantings per week, fuck them, why should they be allowed to roam free on ET?

Then there are fx bots talking one liner shit day in day out.

I prefer these people don't profit from reading good stuff on ET as they are not here to educate but to corrupt.

They can just read the site by logging out or using a second login.

Just Ignorning is pretty good, I think Ricksaw Man has me on Ignore. So i can read his posts and I totally waste my time replying to him. He never sees my reply. So putting people you dont like on ignore can be a great time waster for them. But if they are abusing you, then put them on Block for sure.

Using that logic, the ignore and blocked function is worthless and should be scrapped by Baron.
The block & ignore serves other purposes, inconvenience in reading posts, difficult to respond to directly, serves as a reminder for a good poster not to engage in bs banter, hopefully teaches a lesson to idiots but I doubt it. :)

Not worthless. But cant stop people from reading the site if they really want to.

The site worked fine for decades without the Block feature. Seems like the mods didn't enjoying doing their jobs anymore.

Ignore and block features were introduced I believe on requests from ET members and for me it works and serves its purpose, however it's major failing imo, blocked and ignored members posts are still flagged when accessing 'Followed Threads', in other words their worthless postings are continually brought to your attention.
This is particularly galling when the Empty Tin Can members are posting shit day in, day out.
The only option left is to unfollow threads because of too much pollution.

  9. I have a total of 26 on block. A lot of these are from years ago though and they do not post anymore. Some of them have new nicknames. If I was limited to three or five that would not do at all. :(

You could probably put most of those on Ignore, you probably don't really need to fully block all of them.

I have a few people on Ignore. I no longer Block people, I have no real need to use Block over Ignore. If someone I ignore does a reply to one of my posts i don't care. Why should i care? To me it is just another post that i will ignore from them, just like all the others they write.

I see no need for the extra Block feature (over what Ignore provides) except maybe in very limited cases like constant stalking.
