You, as the defendant, are never obligated to answer any questions asked of you by the police, or anyone else for that matter. It is called the 5th amendment. In this case by opening his pie hole he convicted himself by simply babbling on trying to make himself look innocent. When the cops have nothing, they will try their best and can even lie to you to get you to open up. He did, and they nailed him on it.
