  1. Hey, when you been saving for a whole year to get that mp3 player and now it's on sale for 1/2 off, it is killing time to get to that rap music machine. And if you don't really want it, you can sell it and pocket the extra change and buy some dope with it. It's like a gift from heaven. Walmart is like a church to some people.

  2. Formal charges were filed today against the man authorities say killed three members of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson's family.

William Balfour, 27, who had been the Chicago Police Department's lone suspect, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of home invasion and is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Wednesday, the Cook County state's attorney's office said.

RENO, Nev. – Early in their investigation into the kidnapping and slaying of a young college woman, Reno police were convinced the suspect they described as a serial rapist was a chameleon who blended in with a community grieving the loss of Brianna Denison.

"Likely he looks like somebody you would least suspect, but that is the person who is responsible for this crime," Deputy Police Chief Jim Johns said in February, a day after Denison's body was found.

Biela is charged with murder in Denison's death, as well as kidnapping and sexual assault for an alleged attack on another woman in December near the University of Nevada, Reno. That victim was able to give police a partial description of the suspect and a vehicle.

HANOVER, Pa. – A township commissioner and former police officer who once ran for Congress was arrested after a standoff Monday and accused of kidnapping and raping a woman in Baltimore last month.

Michael Lawrence Johnson Jr., 40, claimed to be a police officer Nov. 2 when he approached a 21-year-old woman who was walking down a Baltimore street and ordered her into his minivan, police said.

Johnson, president of the Penn Township Board of Commissioners in south-central Pennsylvania, allegedly told the woman he was arresting her for prostitution and handcuffed her to the vehicle's back seat.

He then raped her before pushing her out of the van behind a bar, police said. The woman was able to provide a partial license plate number and description of a vehicle sticker that police said they used to link Johnson to the crime.

2 arrested in alleged torture of teen, who escaped

TRACY, Calif. – A Girl Scout leader and her husband were arrested after an emaciated, terrified and nearly naked 17-year-old showed up at a gym with a chain locked to his ankle, saying he had just fled his captors, authorities said Tuesday.

The boy said he had been held captive for nearly a year, said Ellis, adding that he looked as if he was only 10 to 12 years old.

Authorities said they believe the boy had been chained to a car seat but picked up a dropped key, unlocked himself and fled when the car stopped.

Police arrested Kelly Layne Lau, 30, and Michael Schumacher, 34, late Monday after questioning the couple. A subsequent search of their nearby home found further evidence implicating them, said Tracy police spokesman Matt Robinson, who would not describe what officers found.

Former Ga. coach pleads guilty in child porn case

ROME, Ga. – A former tennis coach who produced videos of himself sexually abusing a young girl — sometimes hiding behind a Mardi Gras-style mask — pleaded guilty Tuesday to being the man behind what prosecutors called one of the most popular child porn series in the world.

James "Bart" Huskey was accused of sexually assaulting a minor and posting progressively violent photos and videos of him and the girl — which authorities have dubbed the "Tara" series — on heavily guarded Internet sites.

The 38-year-old could face up to 70 years in prison and a $750,000 fine after pleading guilty to producing, receiving and distributing child pornography. Local authorities can still charge Huskey with rape and sexual assault charges in the case, but have yet to decide whether to do so.

The guilty plea marked the end of a two-year investigation that began in Australia and ultimately helped crack what authorities say was a sophisticated child pornography ring that protected members using encrypted Web sites and timed tests meant to verify users' knowledge of child pornography.

Federal authorities began investigating the ring after Australian police alerted them to an investigation in child pornography traders. The FBI agents soon found disturbing videos of a girl as young as six years old being sexually assaulted.

The man in the postings grew more aggressive over time, and the last one, dated November 2007, showed the man holding a large knife toward the girl's body. But authorities struggled to identify the man because his face was often blurred and he sometimes wore a Mardi Gras-style mask.

The group also zealously guarded its members, said federal prosecutor Francey Hakes. It was a "sophisticated and extremely organized" group that required prospective members to pass a timed test and banned them from chatting and phoning other members so they couldn't identify each other in case one was caught, she said.

Hakes said the group also had its own bank account and appeared to have ordered child pornography from outside producers, distributing the material as far away as Canada, England and Germany.

The investigation turned when authorities were able to track down Huskey's location by identifying footage shot from the interior of his car, said Hakes. Prosecutors say footage from other scenes, including scenes shot in a hotel, also helped them locate him.

Federal authorities said there is pending prosecution against others in the ring, but declined to give details.

Huskey, a former private tennis coach in the north Georgia city of LaFayette, stood silently with his eyes downcast throughout the plea. Two of his relatives accompanied him to the courtroom, and both refused comment.

Prosecutors said the girl, who is now 9, is safe and that she has been referred to programs that provide therapy for victims of child sexual abuse. But authorities say the damage that has been done to the girl is incalculable.

"The guilty plea today of Mr. Huskey helps bring this tragic and twisted crime closer to a close," FBI Atlanta Special Agent Greg Jones said. "The rehabilitation and recovery of Mr. Huskey's juvenile victim is, however, just beginning."

Mom follows dark path from icy rescue to murder charge

    By Emanuella Grinberg
    CNN

(CNN) -- Less than a year after four strangers risked their lives to save Michelle Kehoe and her sons from an icy Iowa River, the mother is accused of slashing the two boys' throats and leaving them to die.

Michelle Kehoe was arrested November 15 after leaving the hospital where she had been since the attack.

Kehoe's 2-year-old son was found dead the morning of October 27 outside the family's van, which was parked a short distance from the Hook-n-Liner pond in Littleton, Iowa.

Her 7-year-old son was injured but still alive inside the van. He was rushed to the hospital for surgery, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Scars on his neck underscore the chilling account he gave police, contained in a police affidavit filed in Buchanan County court. The boy said his mother started with him, taking him from the van before covering his eyes, ears and mouth with duct tape, according to the affidavit. Then, he told police, she cut his throat.

She then moved on to his younger brother, he said. He could hear his brother's cries as she repeated the attack on him, the 7-year-old told police.

Kehoe initially denied involvement in the attacks, blaming them on a stranger. Eventually, she admitted to acquiring the knife and duct tape weeks earlier but could not explain why, the affidavit says.

Kehoe faces life in prison on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder and child endangerment resulting in serious injury. She is being held on $2.5 million bail, County Attorney Allan Vander Hart said. She has not entered a plea but is scheduled for arraignment December 2.

  8. Teen charged with murder as hate crime in immigrant's death

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A grand jury has indicted a Long Island teenager on a charge of second-degree murder as a hate crime in the stabbing death of an Ecuadoran immigrant this month, according to the indictment, unsealed Thursday in Suffolk County District Court.

Marcello Lucero, 37, was stabbed to death in an attack that police say was a hate crime.

Jeffrey Conroy, 17, had been charged with first-degree manslaughter as a hate crime, one count each of gang assault and conspiracy and two counts each of attempted assault and attempted gang assault.

The "hate crime" designation would add to any sentence imposed upon conviction.

Six teenage co-defendants were arraigned Thursday on the same assault, conspiracy and gang assault charges as Conroy. One of the six faces an additional charge of criminal mischief.

Group: Murder suspect has long history with Klan

COVINGTON, Louisiana (CNN) -- The suspect in the shooting of a woman killed during a Ku Klux Klan initiation has at least a seven-year history of Klan activity, according to an organization that tracks hate groups nationwide.

Relatives describe Cynthia Lynch as having a deep need to feel wanted and eager to join groups.

1 of 3 Raymond "Chuck" Foster, 44, was the founding Imperial Wizard, or national leader, of the Southern White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, a Klan faction formed January 1, 2001, in Watson, Louisiana, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

"During the next three years, the group developed chapters in three other states while maintaining a low profile," the Montgomery, Alabama-based center said on its Web site.

By 2004, the Southern White Knights had chapters in Savannah, Georgia; Homosassa Springs, Florida; and Marion, Ohio. Its founding chapter relocated to Denham Springs, Louisiana. The group disbanded in early 2005, the center said.

Foster faces second-degree murder charges in the death of Cynthia Lynch, 43, of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
