When USA goes bankrupt and collapse financially, the extremist will claim that this is "proof" that Allah was backing Osama, and many moderate Muslims could take the bait and become radicals themselves. Can you imagine a ragtag terroist group who wears pajamas bringing down the mighty United States? And yet this is exactly what is happening. This will be the extremists "David and Goliath" story, and Al Qaeda's success could encorage Muslims worldwide that Allah's hand was behind the fall of our country. Osama bin Laden will bring the muslim world together. It will be World War III like situation.
This article shows some very interesting insights in the nature of asymetrical warfare: there is no such thing as "al Qaida". The name al Qaida is banner that's adopted by groups sharing an ideology that can be traced back to Qutb and resistance to Arab socialism in the 1960s and '70s. Anyone can adopt this banner. The ideologists' advantage is that a region of the world can be controlled with very little monetary or fighting effort. Control is excercised by making public life impossible through regular terrorist strikes executed by groups that share an ideology, but don't have a centralized command structure or other features of symmetry with the U.S. military. As long as the ideology of islamism is subscribed to al-Qaida will be like a nine headed dragon that grows back a head after it's cut off.
