Personally I think he deserves much much longer, but if he exposes the whole bunch of previously "untouchable" sickos, so be it however unfair and unjust it is.
I’ll take it on ideas or hope there will be a systemic change that will drill home the point that sex with minors are off limits no matter who you are, you will not be protected anymore, and you will do time.
Except for if your state allows underage marriage but nobody really wants to talk about that. Anyway, there’s a lot of people shaking in their Prada loafers:
They extracted prosecutorial information from him the first time around in return for the plea deal that has been invalidated. It is reported that provided information to facilitate the prosecution of Lehman Bros. types. So do those who were convicted or discovered with the aid of his information now get to argue the "fruit of a poisonous tree" principle? It's messy stuff. I probably will generate some hate mail- but from a civil liberties point of view- I would imagine that Epstein has some valid legal defenses- at least worth trying. How the hell is this supposed to work? The government enters into a plea deal with someone and gets useful information- and then comes back and says- "oh we fucked up and did not follow the law but thanks for the info that we used to prosecute others and now we are going to prosecute you." Very dicey stuff there. If I enter into a plea deal with prosecutors and they fuck up on their end, that's their fucking problem - then they just botched a prosecution. The victims may have rights that the government violated and are probably entitled to compensation from the government. Very dicey way for the government to proceed that way. Offering plea deals, getting the bennies from it, and then still coming after you. More information could change my view. Just sayin, I am not immediately lining up to cheer for how the government handled it the first time or this time around either. Again, not denying- and am in favor of- large civil settlements for the victims, where proven. I get the fact/possibility that the government could be bringing charges on new sets of allegations not covered by the plea deal- but if so they did not need a court clarification/ruling on that, so I assume that- at least in some cases- they are trying for another bite at the same apples.
I distrust all Government “Oopsies”. Especially if it results in well connected criminals getting off lightly. Epstein may agreed quickly to a deal because he knew what could be found would be epically damning. How about Epstein being advised through the grapevine he might want to agree to a deal quickly by politically aware attorneys from either side?
As they should be. As a hypothetical, if it is determined Trump and or other prominent Republican politicians had sex with minors, they need to face the same consequences all pedophiles should be subject to. As far as which law has jurisdiction, I would hope it would be the pervert’s home state laws that would apply. In the alternative, there may be or should be Federal Laws that apply when pedophiles cross state lines for lower “Age of consent” laws. In any case, 15 years old is definitely not appropriate for someone who has passes the normal graduation age of high school. Girls at age 15 for example, tend to be wide eyed and just taking in the world around them. They can be very impressionable and may not have developed the skills in setting limits with men. Then there is the “cringeworthy” test. As a father, how would you feel about a man in his thirties going out with your 16 year old daughter? Edit: With the cringeworthy test, while laws in some states may not have been broken, voters may still exact a political penalty on potential or elected representatives.
