As a "first time offender", Hunter is unlikely to get 25 years if convicted in open court. He would get a couple years at most plus parole. All you need to do is take a look at the sentences other people got on these type of firearm charges to serve as a guideline of what will happen. I actually expect Hunter's lawyer may plead the charges and arrive at a deal with the prosecutor which provides minimal (or no) time.
It's quite enjoyable really that it's charges the Republican extremists hate and will feel drawn to defend him on. It will result in Dems combing for every senior repugs gun ownership cross checking against any substance abuse. You think Matt Gaetz is going to be clean for the same?
Oh gee, are the Republican extremists butt-hurt that the DOJ is infringing on Hunter Biden's Second Amendment rights.
It's a beautiful thing, contemplating how NRA efforts to spread guns everywhere regardless could essentially let Hunter off the hook.

The opinion overturns the conviction of a Mississippi man, Patrick D. Daniels of Gulfport, who had two guns found in his car during a traffic stop last year and acknowledged using marijuana regularly but wasn’t accused of driving under the influence. The appeals court cited the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision known as New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which said gun laws must have strong historical roots — a finding that led to challenges of many of the nation’s gun laws
