Probably less than what you'd get if they did it to your child tbh

First when a "family" comes over the border how do you know that the adults are really the parents rather than human smugglers? How do you know that these "parents" had the best interests of the children in mind? Rather than trying to sell them as laborers or into child prostitution.

"Families" were separated to protect the children. Because many times there was to real evidence that the "parents" were not smugglers or related to the children. Hence many family units were split up.

And yes.. Obama separated many families as well. This is hardly something new under Trump.

Yes, Obama separated families at the border, too

Biden incorrectly claims Obama administration didn't separate families

It probably is, but I don't live in a third world country. It wouldn't be a bonanza for me, but it could support their whole village back home for years and sets a terrible precedent in terms of setting incentives.

So in Afghanistan the U.S. paid out an average of $1500 when they KILLED an innocent civilian. Someone explain to me why we are paying $450K per person for "trauma" from separation.

How much is an Afghan life worth?

Listen, I'm not going to sit here and defend the deporter in chief's track record on splitting families. I've made no secret of my distaste for Obama's attempt at assuaging Republicans by going HAM on enforcement in order to secure an immigration bill. It was always a sucker's bet.

Having said that, number one, the OP is about settlement for the abuses at the border under Trump's admin, number two, it's apples and oranges to compare a blanket policy of family separation to the one instituted by Obama, which was to deport aliens w/criminal records, and not unlike what would get a legal immigrant to lose privileges (assault, possession, DUI's). This fantasy that Obama was splitting families at the border is GOP whitewashing. Not saying it didn't happen, but likelier than not falling w/in the Flores guidelines (which means a few hrs of processing), and not intentionally losing track of kids so they could never be reunited.

Lastly, there really is no point of addressing your "rapists smuggling kids" spiel. It's the same nonsense the GQP uses to demand voter ID's and demand recounts. Sure voter fraud and smuggling happens, but it's comparatively miniscule.

So should settlements fall inline to one's current living conditions? Should a black dude from the hood not get the same settlement as IVY league bro from the Hamptons? These aren't divorce cases

People in this country risk being separated from their kids when they break laws, too.

Paying $450K to people who are deliberately committing a crime for their "trauma". If they were somehow illegally abused in custody... yeah then I could see it on a case by case basis. I could even see greater amounts for a small number of adult women who allegedly were sterilized by some doctor while in custody. But getting paid $450K because you were detained for doing something illegal -- and they separated the kids from the adults because the majority of the "parents" crossing the border had no blood relationship to the minors in their group. I can admit some mistakes were made in identification and individuals who were actually parents were mistaken for not being the actual parents. Yet the amount being given is absurdly high. What do you think a single Mom who is a U.S. citizen who is not breaking the law but is barely scraping by on social benefits and low paid jobs thinks about these payouts?

There's nothing criminally deliberate about kids crossing the border at their parents' urging.

    Source?
