NPR tonight made it sound like Pokey was still in the mix in a big way. Is that true? They pretty much wrote off Stacy as (subtly implied) Sleepy Joe may or may not go the distance. 4 years. That was interesting too. They didn't come out and say it... but they sure talked like SJ's pick is gonna be the first woman president.

Joe is fully in the hands of his handlers at this point. ie. Obama, Mooch, and Valerie Jarrett. They are trying to figure out how to run Susan Rice's name up the flagpole to see who will salute and how badly damaged she is. She, of course, is very badly damaged but they are not having much luck with the other losers. Pokey, Val Demings, the mayor of Atlanta, Kamala, Klobuchar, Stacy- they all have baggage and they can't get any traction with any of them. Ironically, it helps Rice quite a bit because she has political baggage with the republicans which is not really a crime in dem politics although gets her some flack in the general election but at least she would have the support of democrats whereas the dems - particularly the progressives- dont like many of Joe's possible choices. Rice is not known as a progressive but at least she has not been a stormtrooper locking up blacks such as Joe, Kamala, Klobo, and Val Demings- and she was part of Obama's entourage so she has his support even though Obama is outdated a bit these days. Not saying Rice will be chosen. I am saying though that Joe looks to the Obama's at this point and they will continue to drive a fuller look at Rice before moving on and giving up on her. It's pretty grim. Joe tried out Val Demings for two full days in the last week, and she got hammered very badly. They are all damaged. What a mess.

So how did we get from there to here? Simple. Trump's political fortunes have declined significantly in recent months, with his uneven handling of the protests that arose in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd last month tanking his poll numbers. Trump's approval rating in Gallup data took a double-digit hit in recent weeks and a slew of swing state and national polling shows him trailing Biden by significant margins. It's absolutely no coincidence that faced with those numbers, the Trump campaign has reversed its position on debates. Conventional political wisdom dictates that the candidate pushing for more debates is the candidate who is trailing. That person needs debates to create a moment (or moments) that can change the momentum and trajectory of the contest. That person isn't usually the incumbent. Typically challengers push for more debates because they need a forum to land the one big punch that can change things. And so, it's very telling that Trump now finds himself needing more than the standard three debates.
