    KEY FACTS
Sunday marked the 13th consecutive day of protests and demonstrations throughout the country, and the world, following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, while the U.S. also continues to fight a coronavirus pandemic that has claimed more than 110,000 American lives.

The CNN survey was conducted via telephone by SSRS, an independent research company; interviews were conducted from June 2-5, 2020, among a sample of 1,259 respondents, including an oversample of 250 black, nonHispanic respondents.

Just 38% of respondents said they approve of the "way Donald Trump is handling his job as president," while 57% disapprove.

Last month, his job approval rating sat at 45%.

The survey found that 55% of voters would vote for Biden if the election were held today, while 41%would favor Trump.

Biden's 55% support represents the highest level it has reached.

An overwhelming majority of Americans (84%) say the peaceful protests happening all across the country over police violence against black people are justified.

67% of all respondents believe that racism is "a big problem" in our society today.

    Key Background:
Trump has been criticized for his handling of Covid-19 dating back to February. Just last week, several former high-ranking military officials, including retired Gen. Jim Mattis, condemned the president for his divisive response to Floyd's death and the ensuing aftermath. Protesters may be encouraged by developments this past weekend. In Minneapolis on Sunday, a veto-proof supermajority of the city council pledged their commitment to defunding and dismantling the city's police force. That same day in New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the city would move funding away from the police department and instead put it toward youth and social services. Per Monday's CNN survey, 60% of white Americans called racism a big problem, up from 43% who said so in a 2015 CNN/Kaiser Family Foundation survey.

    Chief Critic:
President Trump took to Twitter on Monday morning to mock the CNN poll as "fake." He correctly pointed out that multiple polls showed that Hillary Clinton held a seemingly insurmountable lead in the runup to the 2016 general election, which Trump won. "CNN Polls are as Fake as their Reporting," Trump tweeted. "Same numbers, and worse, against Crooked Hillary. The Dems would destroy America!"
