I short a lot of equities, cefs and etps, and hedge with long calls on the same underlyings. (I also do some futures positions spreads for income.) Will Quicken handle this? TradeLog? Others?
Unless you're playing some skew games you realize if you're shorting the underlying and hedging with long calls you're just trading long synthetic puts right? S = C - P => -S = P - C => -S + C = P
Yes, I do. On this particular pair, as an outright or a synthetic position, the long-dated puts have wide spreads, and because of decay speed, I'd rather not do short-term long puts. Hence, the short stock with protective calls, which has been a very very nice trade for quite some time. Btw, I have taken more speculative long LEAP puts in an another account, and I will be curious how that pans out in 18 months or so.
