    Maverick74,

Thanks. I did it and it is a great stand-in when I don't want to pound my legs on a given day by running. I had the incline up to four in conjunction with the treadmill on the highest speed possible given my gate, before I had to start running. I mixed it up a bit by changing randomly the angle of the incline to give it a more real world feel of hiking through some terrain. Funny, when I went from 4 to 0, I felt like I was walking downhill :)

I have an outlier data point, I did not lose any weight this week. Strange, since by any law of physics I know I must have lost some weight. The only thing I can think of is that there is an error term in the scale. That, along with minor weight differences in weight from being fully hydrated to not means that I was probably off by a couple of pounds. Also, I am 90% certain I have gained muscle, although in the areas where there is a layer of fat, it is still hiding. Places where there is almost no fat, the changes in definition are obvious. However, if no weight loss happens again next week, my theory is probably at least partially incorrect, and I have to look into intensifying work out.

  2. how are you "90% certain" you gained NET MUSCLE?

    i can't wait to hear this :D

  4. What would you have the FDA do? Ban everything, put it ALL under a physician's script? Vitamins, minerals, OTC sniffle meds etc??

There is a move afoot to ban OTC vitamins, place it all under a physician's script. Is this what you want?

    If by a 1/4 of a mile you mean 400 meters... :D

Breaking 50 seconds is some serious business, most people couldn't do it in their 20's even if they trained for it. What's your PB if I may ask?

I wouldn't worry too much about seeming to be stuck in a plateau regarding loss weight: you could be losing fat every day and yet even if you were putting on just a bit of muscle the scale wouldn't show it. When you're working simultaneously on weight loss and muscle gain a mirror is a better indicator - just don't get too addicted :p

Our track was in yards, so I ran the 440 yards. Very close to the 400 meters. My PB was a shade over 51. I have no doubt I could have run a 49 and change. I broke my hand during football practice and was sidelined for most of the season with a cast so I was never able to see what my real limit is. Today I would be happy to run my PB as a freshman, a shade over 55 indoors (equates to about a 54 maybe 53 and change outdoors - indoors no wind, but outdoors less turns).

I don't know why Usane Bolt doesn't run the 400 meters. Wuss. The most grueling distance in all of T&F imo. It is supposed to be an all out sprint, but probably humanly impossible. If true, UB would run a 9.53 * 4 = 38.12 - a couple of seconds = ~36 since the other 300 meters has a running start. The current men's world record is held by Michael Johnson, with a time of 43.18 seconds. Yeah, dream on.

I wonder at what distance do human sprinters begin to decelerate from an all out explosive sprint? If Usane Bolt ran say the 110 meters, would his % time difference be even more, or less? Is 100 meters arbitrary, or is it perfectly matched to the optimal distance where humans are neither accelerating nor decelerating at the finish line?

  8. how does "perceived" exertion make the process more objective LOL :D

  9. What happens with human acceleration with the 110 meters hurdles? 200 meters? I am sure some scientist has wasted his time breaking it down. Probably the taller you are the longer it takes to hit max speed.

  10. Your abs first thing in the morning tell everything. Or just ask your Significant Other. A decent gym will usually have a guy that's good with calipers and % body fat measurements as well.
