Just an update, the anti-virus article is now online and free to read: May 2010: Security Software Showdown
I few months back I had a virus on my main PC. I had ESET, and it didn't work. I used a service where the firm tries to get rid of it by remote access. They tried many things, but only SuperAntiSpyware found the bug and killed it.
+1 for SuperAntiSpyware. Yesterday, I visit an innocent looking website about lexus cars and .. BAM... got a " AV Virus " popup ... saying my computer is infected and I need to click to protect. I did my usual thing to try and get to Task Manager to kill the process .. but it won't allow Task Manager to run. So, I turned off the power and rebooted but on reboot the AV Virus started again and won't let me use IE or Chrome at all. I tried several things , like restore points etc ... nothing worked. Luckily, I had a 2nd login account with administrator rights on this Vista laptop so I switched users ... and was able to try about 5 anti-virus programs .. the only effective ones, to clean up .. some stuff was Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware .... with the later finally fixing theproblem. Whew .. that was a close call...
This link (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407) has very good systematic instructions for "cleaning" your systems, as well as prevention of future problems. The main points of interest are that the best anti-Spyware/anti-virus removal tools are SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. They recommend running them in that order, and *not* running them in safe mode unless you get stuck in a situation where they won't run in normal mode. Also, if one of the apps tells you to restart, don't restart in safe mode or the full cleanup does not occur. Using the dynamic duo of SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware as instructed has enabled me to clean up some majorly infected machines ( my sons like gaming on their laptops and occasionally get infected with stuff ). I also was able to help a few non-technical friends who had compromised machines over the past couple of years. Right now I am running with Comodo Firewall installed and do weekly scans with SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware - haven't seen any issues in over 2 years.

Get a Mac, no virus or malware worries. And a much more stable and reliable operating system. Not worth the risk to trade on a crapbox running a crap operatingsystem
