Here's a list of my all-time favorites. I made two requirements, first that I'd include no greatest hits LPs. Unfortunately there are a lot of artists I like (Righteous Bros, Ray Charles, Sly Stone, Steve Miller, Chet Baker, Tom Petty, Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison, etc. etc.) but they have no stand-out killer albums, just a lot of great songs. So they're not on this list. Second, that all the artists would be recognizable by most, as I didn't see any point including obscure singers. Anyway, these are my fave LPs (that I could think of) in no particular order.
    • Revolver (Beatles)
    • Abbey Road (Beatles)
    • Blonde on Blonde (Dylan)
    • Blood on the Tracks (Dylan)
    • Cheap Thrills (Janis Joplin)
    • Court and Spark (Joni Mitchell)
    • Miles of Aisles (Joni Mitchell)
    • Led Zeppelin (1st LP)
    • Kind of Blue (Miles Davis)
    • Let It Bleed (Rolling Stones)
    • Disraeli Gears (Cream)
    • Sunshine Superman (Donovan)
    • Cohen Live (Leonard Cohen)
    • The Sun Sessions (Elvis Presley)
    • Live at the Apollo '62 (James Brown)
    • Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd)
    • Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)
    • Who's Next (The Who)
    • Astral Weeks (Van Morrison)
    • Axis Bold as Love (Jimi Hendrix)
    • Electric Ladyland (Jimi Hendrix)
    • The Trinity Session (Cowboy Junkies)
    • Lay It Down (Cowboy Junkies)
    • Traveling Wilburys 1st (Dylan, Harrison, Petty, Orbison...)
    • Wildflowers (Judy Collins)
    • Doors (1st LP)
    • Wild, Innocent & E. Street Shuffle (Springsteen)
    • Born to Run (Springsteen)
    • Köln (Keith Jarrett)
    • For Everyman (Jackson Browne)
    • Famous Blue Raincoat (Jennifer Warnes)
    • After Bathing at Baxters (Jefferson Airplane)
    • Volunteers (Jefferson Airplane)
    • Bluebird (Emmylou Harris)
    • Tea For the Tillerman (Cat Stevens)
    • Teaser and the Firecat (Cat Stevens)
    • Forever Changes (Love)
    • Pretenders (1st LP)

  5. WOW....GREAT LIST!!!

(maybe because it is kind of similar to my own).

I never would have thought there would be a single person here that would have known "Forever Changes". Great album. I still have the LP. (but no needle in my turntable...I really should do something about that). Truly one of the best albums, and worthy of a much shorter list.

Arthur Lee. "orange skies, carnivals and cotton candy...." Man...sometimes that tune just pops into my head still. And there is no way I have heard it in at least 20 years. (That's how long I've had a broken needle). Never ever heard it on the radio. Tomorrow I buy the CD!!

Only group of that era that to my knowledge did not tour. I practically lived at the Fillmore East. I can't think of another group that wasn't there. (Velvet Underground maybe...but I saw them somewhere in NY).

So Magna, in homage to your great list, I will add the Mothers of Invention's amazing "We're Only In It For The Money" to my list. For a few reasons. Great album on it's own merit. And the ingenious spoof cover (of Sgt. Pepper). And they just deserve to be on the list. And, Magna is a big fan!!

Now, only one question: Although you explained your criteria for your list, and it makes sense, how can you say, without some kind of disclaimer, that only the first album by Led Zeplin belongs on the list.

If there was a separate list of greatest debut albums of all times (Rock n Roll), then obviously Led Zeplin's first album would have to be the entire list.
But is it better on a general list than any number of LZ albums? (I had a similar dilemma with the Cream albums).

Oh, and a glaring ommision from my list (also to make Bung happy)..."Aladin Sane": David Bowie

And, how did any of us forget: "Desperado"?

Peace, Love, and Rock 'n Roll,
    :)RS
