Why do you think VIX is forward-looking? High VIX values point to an expectation of a large move but nothing can be said about the direction. Ths is hardly "forward-looking".

As "forward-looking", nothing really. The only thing that can come close to "forward-looking" in the case of trading is high probability setups.
