Becoming an Energy Trader

Discussion in 'Commodity Futures' started by drailing12, Aug 16, 2012.

  1. Hello -

What are some common backgrounds, outside of econ/finance, that lead to a career in energy trading?

I'm entering a program to study chemical engineering. This program tends to feed to energy companies, but in refining, not trading. Is a shift there possible?

    Thanks.

I'm currently an energy trader and I can honestly say they come from a variety of backgrounds. A lot of engineers but I never heard of one being a chemical engineer. I would say swtich to electrical or mechanical and then get an MBA. Also join or start an investment club at your university, do some internships, etc. The hard part is getting your foot in the door so the more things you have on your resume the better. Good luck.
