Even if you take out pig's feet that is still a lot of pork exporting out when there are claims there are shortages due to kinks in the supply chain. I am all for exports but since Smithfield is a Chinese owned company.....what priority do you think Smithfield management is setting when it is faced with exports v. domestic sales...

yeah they are going to choose exports every time.... Glad Trump ordered them to stay open so they can increase exports.

  2. Trump, who is in an acrimonious public dispute with Beijing over its handling of the coronavirus outbreak, invoked the 1950 Defense Production Act on April 28 to keep plants open. Now he is facing criticism from some lawmakers, consumers and plant employees for putting workers at risk in part to help ensure China’s meat supply.

Meat buyers in China ramped up imports from around the world as a pig disease decimated its herd, the world’s largest, and pushed Chinese pork prices to record highs. The supply shock drove China to pay more for U.S. meat than other countries, and even U.S. consumers, since late 2019.

“We know that over time exports are critically important. I think we need to focus on meeting domestic demand at this point,” said Mike Naig, the agriculture secretary in the top U.S. pork-producing state of Iowa who supported Trump’s order.

The problem with Trump is things are not done out in the open or with any thought. Rather than show concern for anything domestic it is often China first lately so.....enjoy all the meat China!

    1. that is irrelevant to the points I was conscerned about.
    2. He brought up one article about pork.
    were contracts in place?
was that food supposed to go to US consumers?
are they working to keep more of the meat in the US?

I don't trust hype or headlines for Trump or Anti Trump.
I like facts sourced in multiple places.

If you all wish to make a thread with good sources and decent context I will be happy to read.
For now I am not drawing any conclusions based on anything GWB says related to Covid. He has proven to claim things as fact which have been figments of his imagination or worse on these Covid threads.

Statistics don't lie on meat exports. They are going up -- -well documented in the Reuter's article with their links.

The Defense Production Act should only be enacted to ensure that meat supplies are available to Americans not for the Chinese. The majority of these meat processing plants are processing meat for export. Several do not even ship meat for domestic consumption.

A GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Native Americans hit by coronavirus has gone viral in Ireland, raising over $3 million.

In 1847, various Native Americans, including the Choctaw people, donated $170 (equivalent to around $5,000 today) to Ireland as the country was suffering from the Great Famine or Hunger, during which around one million died.

Now thousands of Irish are repaying the favor as coronavirus hits the Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico

Just so this is clear... I am not arguing that we should be shipping meat to China.

    1. I am saying you introduced this as a red herring to what I had been discussing.
Covid's impact on meat industry workers.

Jem is full of shit. As usual.

Americans are dying to feed China and Trump is killing them to win favours from future donors.

    Simple.
