Batman was "killed"?

I don't really understand why people say Batman was killed in the movie "The Dark Knight". At the end of the movie, he sped off on his motorcycle and the police were chasing him on foot with dogs. Are there different versions of this movie?

Also, does anyone know if there really are two different endings for the Shawshank Redemption?
