Jeffrey David Nichols, 51, of Landers Road was arraigned yesterday in Boston Municipal Court. He was released without bail and ordered to stay off the MBTA while his case is pending, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. He is due back in court Feb. 19. Nichols was arrested by MBTA police on Friday at 8:45 a.m. at the State Street Station. He was charged with indecently assaulting a plainclothes Transit Police detective. The Transit Police's anti-groping unit had been dispatched to the Blue Line after information was received from an MBTA customer, according to the MBTA. Incidents of indecent assault on the T rose from 44 in 2007 to 69 last year, according to the MBTA. MBTA officials attributed the increase to the launch of an anti-sexual harrassment campaign that urged passengers to call police if they are inappropriately touched.
