While I do recommend having both TTN to monitor your position and having a stop in, I also would construct hypothetical scenarios in your mind in which your positions would rapidly go radically against you and prepare to respond to such price action before the news hits; it's not uncommon to see some guy sitting on the offer shorting stock for 10-15 minutes before it hits the wire (Trade The News first, usually) that the SEC and FBI are investigating said company for accounting fraud of up to $300,000,000... if any stock that's up on takeover chatter starts to rapidly sell off, it's probably becasue someone whom the market deems important said that a deal is unlikely to occur.
