    Boeing Plane Crash

A Lion Air plane carrying 189 people has crashed off the coast of Indonesia. The plane was pretty new—a Boeing 737 MAX 8 that was delivered in August. The model only took to the skies last year; Boeing has 3,000 on order and has delivered 220, 13 of which went to Lion Air. Wall Street Journal

    Bombardier Cuts

Bombardier is cutting 5,000 jobs around the world. Half of the cuts will be in Canada, and most will be in its aerospace division. The planes-and-trains firm is trying to "streamline" its operations, and it reckons slashing 7% of its workforce will save it $250 million. BBC

    Boeing Safety

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg has been trying to reassure staff, pilots and customers in the wake of the Lion Air crash that involved one of the company's new 737 Max aircraft. It's still not clear to what degree an update to the plane's automated safety system—apparently not communicated to pilots—contributed to the disaster. Muilenburg: "Regardless of the outcome, we're going to learn from this accident and continue to improve our safety record." Washington Post

    Airbus A380

Airbus is finally scrapping its A380 program, following order cancellations from major customers such as Emirates. The world's biggest passenger jet is simply too inflexible—it's heavy and not very fuel-efficient, which means it's only economical to run on fully-booked long-haul routes. Emirates and others are instead turning to the smaller A330neo and A350. Wall Street Journal
