Like in any trading competition, you probably to take insane risks to have a chance to win and you probably have to overfit. If you were to run 1000 strategies, you are bound to find a few ones which will show high returns over a sample period. Just to make sure the strategies have a real you would need to forward test these strategies over a longer period. It is great for the developpers since you get extra money (whether you are successful), and great for the sponsors because it attracts people who will be lured by how easy this looks ...
If you just browse the page until http://championship.mql5.com/2011/en/users/index/page8 You will see that more than half are in negative equity (this probably does not even count commissions, maybe I am wrong on this one as I did not read the rules). I think I will try to enter this competition next time with someone really basic like an overfitted modified Donchian system ...
Automated Trading Championship 2011: Third Week Report The third week of the Championship became notable for the flat movement of the EURUSD pair which is the most popular among the participating Expert Advisors. A unique situation has come into being eventually - the difference between equity sizes of the first and the last participant in TOP-10 comprises only $4000!
