Auto experts, why does GM have so many brands.

  1. Would have been an interesting and original suggestion... 10 years ago. GM has already pulled the plug on its Olds, Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer & Saab brands.

  2. It should pull the plug on chevy/Buick.

Keep GMC for everything, cadillac for its premium line.

  3. Apparently Buick is big overseas. GM originally had so many "brands" because they started as independent companies that were rolled into what became General Motors.

Over time the bean counters gutted the independent nature of what became each "brand" until it reached the point where each division was selling the same care but with a different level of trim (leather vs. "fuzzy" seats, vinyl vs. standard top, fake wire wheels vs. standard hubcaps, plastic body cladding and a fake spoiler vs. fake wood trim, etc).

  4. Toyota owns part of Subaru, Tesla, and I think Suzuki.
